Welcome to the Panopticon!
Welcome to the Panopticon! is a short film and art installation created by Jasmine A Golphin that premiered at Maelstrom Collaborative Arts May 2024.
A multi-narrative reflection on existential fears, the paranormal and the ever-present search for guidance. And what to do if you start seeing ghosts...
This is a 2D adaption of the 360° projected installation.
And here is a curated playlist of work that inspired this project
Welcome to the Panopticon! explores our relationship to authority, self-policing, and fear. Thematically similar to topics explored in my previous work Because You Watched and Above | Below, Welcome to the Panopticon! serves as a space to reflect on all the ways we operate our own surveillance state.
Guests attended timed screenings at Maelstrom Collaborative Arts May 2024 to watch the film inside a hexagonal-shaped tent. Three projectors mapped across the walls of the tent with guests seated in the center - the "guard tower" position of a panopticon- as the film plays out sporadically across all six walls. The tent walls are a light, translucent material to create a serene, welcoming sense of imprisonment.
Welcome to the Panopticon! was supported by Dobama Theatre, Maelstrom Collaborative Arts, Cleveland Camera Rental’s 2024 Rental Credit Grant, and The Foundation for Contemporary Arts’ Emergency Grant.
